About the Exhibit

The images and symbols of the Biblical stories of exodus and subsequent wandering are deep and multilayered, permanently shaping the People of God and their stories, and echoing in the Son of God and his teachings.

I have borrowed this symbolic language to paint, draw, and embroider the human experience of picking a destination in the distance and setting off, only to find the way winding through unexpected valleys and obstructions, and often ending in a place that looks and feels wholly different than expected.

About the Artist

Kara Virginia Russo is a mixed media abstract artist working with watercolor, ink, collage, pencil, and embroidery to create works with layers of meaning and symbol. After receiving her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Converse College in Spartanburg, SC, she lived in Asia and Europe before returning with her husband and two children to settle in Greenville, SC. Her work deals with themes of grief, joy, ritual, loss, love, and God.

I work in mixed media, with a watercolor and ink process that is often fittingly unpredictable. These works were created in transition, spanning two continents and four workspaces. They comprise a travel log of sorts, and invite the viewer to contemplate their own journey and the visible and invisible leading of God.
